Ganguro: A Lesson on Japanese Rebellious Makeup

Ganguro is an alternative fashion trend in Japan characterized by coloured hair and dark skin among women way back in 2000 and remains popular today, mostly concentrated in the Shibuya and Ikebukuro districts. It’s basically a visual form of revenge on traditional Japanese society where individual expression by women is not looked well upon. This is their attempt to express themselves freely in open defiance by looking like everything Japanese traditionalists frown upon — dark/tanned skin, dyed hair, flamboyant clothing and anything that sets you apart from the rest. For the serious rebels, they don’t paint their face dark, they tan to the extreme. But this style is so popular now that there are television shows and fashion magazines specifically on Ganguro makeup and fashion! Oh and the literal translation of Ganguro is black face girls.
